Shed The Ego: It's Why You're Broke

The Ego’s Trap

The ego is a tricky thing. It can be our greatest motivator, pushing us to achieve and strive for more, but when unchecked, it becomes a weight that holds us back—financially, emotionally, and spiritually. One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is how the ego can trap us in a cycle of scarcity, always seeking external validation and material proof of our worth. And until we shed it, we remain stuck, unable to see or fully embrace the abundance that’s already around us.

For a long time, I found myself caught in the ego’s grip. I believed that in order to feel successful or valuable, I needed to invest in things that would outwardly show my achievements. Expensive brands, luxury items, things that screamed I made it.

But here’s the catch: these purchases weren’t truly for me. They were trophies to prove my hard work to others, symbols I clung to so I could feel validated by the world around me. Yet, no matter how much I spent or how much validation I received, I didn’t feel fulfilled. Instead, I felt stuck—stagnant, chasing a sense of worth that never seemed to stick.

The Scarcity Mindset

This cycle fed into a scarcity mindset, making me feel like I had to constantly prove I wasn’t “broke.” Ironically, the more I tried to prove my abundance through external displays, the more disconnected I became from true abundance. I was so focused on material validation that I overlooked the simple, priceless joys of life—moments of gratitude, connections, and the ability to provide for my needs without overextending myself.

Scarcity isn’t just about a lack of money; it’s a mindset that makes you believe you’re always falling short. It whispers that you need more, that what you have isn’t enough, and that your worth is tied to how much you can show off.

Breaking Free from the Ego

The turning point came when I began questioning why I felt the need to seek validation through material things. Did I actually value these items, or was I using them to gain approval? Was I truly grateful for what I already had, or was I letting simplicity slip by unnoticed?

Shedding the ego meant redefining what abundance meant to me. It meant:

  • Choosing gratitude: Noticing and appreciating the little things—the smell of coffee in the morning, a heartfelt conversation, or the ability to pay my bills.

  • Being intentional: When I did choose to invest in something, I asked myself if it truly brought me joy or if I was just seeking validation.

  • Releasing the need to prove myself: My worth isn’t determined by what I own but by who I am and how I show up in the world.

Healthy Ego, Healthy Finances

A healthy ego isn’t about stripping yourself of confidence or ambition; it’s about aligning your values with your actions. When your ego is in balance, you no longer feel the need to constantly prove your worth through material things. Instead, you make choices that serve both your soul and your goals.

Now, when I buy something, I make sure it’s not just a trophy but something that genuinely enhances my life. A luxury item can still be a meaningful purchase if it’s intentional and rooted in gratitude rather than validation.

Abundance in Simplicity

True abundance isn’t about how much you spend or how many people admire your achievements. It’s about recognizing the wealth that exists in simplicity—the things money can’t buy but that enrich your life in immeasurable ways.

When you shed the ego, you free yourself from the constant chase. You stop needing external proof of your worth and start seeing abundance everywhere—in your relationships, your health, your creativity, and even in life’s small, quiet moments.

The ego is why you’re broke—not just financially, but emotionally and spiritually. It keeps you chasing validation instead of appreciating what you already have. But when you let go of the need to prove yourself, you open the door to a life of genuine abundance and fulfillment. So, ask yourself: What are you really chasing? Is it validation, or is it peace? Shed the ego, and you’ll find that abundance has been waiting for you all along.
